Algeria’s Ministry of Higher Education and Scientific Research announced the establishment of the country’s first National Doctoral School in Quantum Computing for the 2025/2026 academic year. Decree No. 163 of September 29, 2025, authorized higher education institutions to provide doctoral training in the discipline and set the number of available positions, according to the University of Science and Technology Houari Boumediene.

A total of 27 doctoral positions were distributed among five Algerian universities. Ferhat Abbas University in Setif (Setif 1), which hosts the ministry-accredited Master’s program in Quantum Computing launched in 2023, serves as the coordinating institution. Applications were accepted through the PROGRES platform from October 4 to 13, 2025, with the entrance examination held on November 12 at Setif 1, according to the university’s call for applications.

By creating a structured doctoral pathway in quantum computing, the Ministry extended the workforce pipeline it began building with the 2023 Master’s program. Algeria is among a small number of African countries with government-directed graduate and doctoral programs in this field.
