On September 26, 2024, AUKUS defense leaders unveiled the winners of the partnership’s inaugural Electronic Warfare (EW) Challenge during the third AUKUS ministerial meeting in London. According to the Defense Innovation Unit announcement, 173 qualified companies across all three nations had applied to participate in the competition, which was launched in March 2024.
Winners from each country were selected by subject-matter experts. U.S. winners included Distributed Spectrum Inc., while Australian winners included Advanced Design Technology Pty Ltd, Inovor Technologies Pty Ltd, and Penten Pty Ltd. U.K. winners included Amiosec Ltd, the University of Liverpool, Roke Manor Research Ltd, and Autonomous Devices Ltd.
DIU Director Doug Beck said the solutions identified would help “address important parts of the EW challenge we all face.” U.S. Secretary of Defense Lloyd Austin stated during the ministerial press conference that AUKUS innovation leads were developing a two-year agenda to strengthen cooperation between their governments’ technology-focused centers of excellence. While the first challenge focused on electronic warfare, the model could be applied to other Pillar II areas including quantum technologies.
