The Australian Government awarded AU$18.4 million (approximately US$12 million) to the University of Sydney to establish Quantum Australia, a national centre to grow the quantum industry and ecosystem. The grant was announced by Minister for Industry and Science Ed Husic and awarded through the Australian Centre for Quantum Growth program following an open competitive process.

Quantum Australia was designed to raise awareness of quantum technology, encourage the creation and growth of quantum startups, and connect quantum companies nationally and internationally. Professor Stephen Bartlett of the University of Sydney Nano Institute led the consortium and served as foundation director.

Partners included Macquarie University, UNSW, and the University of Technology Sydney, all of which were part of the NSW Government-funded Sydney Quantum Academy. The centre built on actions outlined in the National Quantum Strategy released in May 2023.
