As of February 2023, 43 projects under the Quantum Austria funding initiative had been awarded approximately €78 million in total funding, according to the European Commission’s project page for the initiative. The awarded amount represented roughly three-quarters of the total €107 million budget allocated from the NextGenerationEU Recovery and Resilience Facility.

Funding covered research infrastructure including high-performance computing (HPC), collaborative research projects, and basic research grants. An annual report published by the Austrian Federal Chancellery for 2022 noted that the first FFG call generated proposals with a recommended funding volume of €61.7 million, well above the original budget of €39.2 million allocated for that call. Projects that could not be funded from the initial allocation were placed on a reserve list.

Both the FFG and FWF used existing funding instruments to accelerate disbursement. A steering committee for the initiative was established at a constituent meeting in July 2022, and an international Scientific Advisory Board was involved in implementation.
