In June 2025, the BeQCI consortium deployed the first cross-border Measurement Device Independent QKD (MDI QKD) link between Belgium and Luxembourg. According to imec’s 2025 overview, the milestone was achieved by the consortium with imec as a strategic partner.
MDI QKD is a protocol that removes security vulnerabilities associated with detection equipment, providing a higher level of security assurance than standard QKD implementations. The cross-border connection had been identified as a goal since the BeQCI project’s launch in January 2023, when the consortium noted its intention to explore QCI links with Luxembourg and the Netherlands.
BeQCI is funded by the EU and the Belgian Science Policy Office (Belspo). The cross-border link represents a step toward integrating Belgium’s national quantum communication network with the broader EuroQCI terrestrial segment.
