In December 2022, the Brazilian Company for Industrial Research and Innovation (Embrapii) announced its intention to fund a quantum computing initiative through a public call for proposals. The initiative, part of Embrapii’s broader “Future of Industry” program, would allocate approximately BRL 60 million (approximately USD 11 million) to establish a Competence Center in Quantum Technologies.
According to The Quantum Insider, the planned center would establish an association of private companies on a membership basis to promote an open innovation environment encouraging the formation and attraction of startups. Selected businesses would receive resources to enhance their knowledge, education, and human resources in quantum computing, with a 42-month timeframe for research and development activities.
Funding for the initiative originated from the PPI IoT/Manufacturing 4.0 program of the Ministry of Science, Technology and Innovation (MCTI), under the Information Technology Law. Embrapii launched public calls for a total of nine Competence Centers across seven different frontier technology areas during 2022.
