In December 2023, the Quantum Industrial Innovation (QuIIN) center was formally established at Senai Cimatec in Salvador, Bahia, through a partnership between Senai Cimatec, MCTI, and Embrapii. QuIIN operates as the Embrapii Cimatec Competence Center in Quantum Technologies, with financial resources from the PPI IoT/Manufacturing 4.0 program.
According to a paper published in the Brazilian Journal of Physics, QuIIN’s mission is to advance quantum technologies by building collaborative R&D partnerships with academia and industry, providing training and capacity building in quantum communication and quantum computing, and supporting startup development. By early 2026, QuIIN had assembled a multidisciplinary team of over 80 researchers, including physicists, mathematicians, computer scientists, and engineers.
A central research focus of QuIIN is continuous-variable quantum key distribution (CV-QKD), with the team working toward implementing Brazil’s first point-to-point CV-QKD system over optical fiber. The center also operates the Latin American Quantum Computing Center (LAQCC), which hosts the KUATOMU quantum simulator used by researchers across the region.
