BRICS countries discussed cybersecurity cooperation and quantum computing threats at the 11th in-person Meeting of the Working Group on Security in the Use of Information and Communication Technologies, held in Brasilia on April 11, 2025. According to the official BRICS Brazil presidency website, the meeting addressed concrete proposals to strengthen protection against cyber threats and reduce the technological gap among nations.
Lisandro Granville, Director-General of Brazil’s National Network for Education and Research (RNP), emphasized the importance of academic research to anticipate future challenges such as quantum computing and post-quantum algorithms. Granville noted these technologies are not yet a reality in everyday life but require preparation now.
Measures discussed included drafting a memorandum of understanding between member countries’ cyber incident response centers, promoting research and development of secure technologies, and creating direct communication channels among law enforcement agencies. Dr. Jabu Mtsweni from the South African Council for Scientific Research highlighted the importance of BRICS members collaborating to develop local solutions rather than relying on foreign technologies in strategic sectors such as cybersecurity.
