Scientists from the Cyprus University of Technology (CUT) deployed the country’s first quantum communication network as part of the Cyprus Quantum Communication Infrastructure (CYQCI) project. Led by Professor Kyriacos Kalli, with technical implementation by Dr. Mariella Minder, the network established quantum key distribution (QKD) links between seven government end-users, according to an official announcement reported by Cyprus Mail.
Operation of the network was demonstrated at the Cyprus Quantum Security Info Day on June 5, 2025, at the premises of the Digital Security Authority (DSA) in Nicosia. During the event, a live video call with quantum-enhanced security was conducted between the DSA and the Deputy Ministry of Research, Innovation and Digital Policy (DMRID), using a direct QKD link between the two buildings. Representatives from the Cyprus Organisation for Standardisation and international industry stakeholders including Quantum Telecommunications Italy, Adtran, and Officina Stellare also participated.
CYQCI was co-funded by the European Commission and the DMRID. Dr. Konstantinos Katzis, a core member of the CYQCI team, announced plans to acquire an optical ground station for satellite-based links that would connect Cyprus to other EU member states. According to the project roadmap, the next phase will focus on cross-border connections linking Cyprus with Greece, Bulgaria, and the Netherlands as part of the broader EuroQCI initiative.
