On July 2, 2024, NATO’s Transatlantic Quantum Community (TQC) held its inaugural meeting in Brussels, with Denmark serving as the first national chair. More than half of NATO Allies were already participating, including the United States, Canada, France, Italy, and Czechia, according to a NATO press release.
NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg had called for the community’s creation in September 2023. In the intervening period, NATO’s first-ever Quantum Technologies Strategy was agreed, and the Alliance’s International Staff collaborated with member states to establish the TQC. The community brings together quantum experts from national governments, industry, academia, funding bodies, and research institutions.
At the TQC’s first annual plenary in Copenhagen on November 12-13, 2024, 22 Allies were participating. Topics covered included scaling up quantum technologies, industry partnerships, funding challenges, talent development, and dual-use applications. Denmark continued to chair the TQC through its first year before handing the role to the United Kingdom in May 2025.
