Metrosert hosted QEst Hack 2025, Estonia’s first hackathon dedicated to quantum computing, from December 3 to 5, 2025. According to Metrosert, the event was organized in collaboration with IBM, IQM, and the city of Sherbrooke in Canada, and received support from the Ministry of Economic Affairs and Communications.
Participating companies brought data-intensive or complex business processes to explore whether quantum algorithms could make them more efficient. Mentors included experts from the Sherbrooke University Institute for Quantum Computing and quantum computing specialists from Finland and Latvia. Nataly Dubbelman, Metrosert’s Quantum Technology Coordinator, said the event aimed to establish the first practical connection between Estonian businesses and quantum computing.
According to Metrosert, participating companies began planning follow-up projects after the hackathon, and several students received internship offers to continue working on their solutions. Dubbelman noted that universities and ministries play a key role in developing Estonia’s quantum technology ecosystem, citing the quantum computing micro-degree opening at the University of Tartu in February 2026 as a positive step.
