Countries & Organisations

On September 30, 2025, the European Telecommunications Standards Institute (ETSI) announced that its Board had approved the creation of a new Technical Committee on Quantum Technologies (TC QT). According to the ETSI announcement, the committee’s primary objective is to develop specifications addressing quantum communications and quantum networks across multiple sectors.

TC QT’s scope covers quantum communications, quantum networking, quantum sensing, satellite quantum communications, quantum random number generators, and quantum security. Mark Pecen of EigenQ was designated to convene the initial kick-off meeting, scheduled for December 2025. He noted that ETSI had first established a group on Quantum Key Distribution in 2008.

ETSI stated that TC QT will support European policy objectives, including contributions to the European Quantum Act and the European Chips Act. The committee will also support the European Quantum Communication Infrastructure (EuroQCI) and integrate research outcomes from Horizon Europe. It will engage with European and international standards organizations to promote alignment and avoid duplication.
