On June 27, 2023, the EuroHPC Joint Undertaking signed hosting agreements with six sites across Europe for the deployment and operation of its first European quantum computers. Representatives of the hosting entities, the European Commission, and EuroHPC JU gathered in Luxembourg for the signing ceremony.
According to the EuroHPC JU, the hosting agreements define the roles, rights, and obligations of each party. The quantum computers will be co-funded by the EuroHPC JU budget from the Digital Europe Programme and contributions from 17 participating states, with total planned investment exceeding €100 million.
Procurement processes for the quantum computers, to be managed by EuroHPC JU, were to begin immediately following the signing. Each system uses a different quantum technology architecture, including superconducting qubits, neutral atoms, trapped ions, and photonics, ensuring diversity and complementary capabilities for European users.
