On July 16, 2025, the European Commission adopted a proposal to amend the EuroHPC Joint Undertaking regulation to include a dedicated quantum technologies pillar alongside support for AI gigafactories. The proposed amendment would transfer Horizon Europe Pillar 2 quantum research and innovation activities into the EuroHPC JU, consolidating coordination of EU quantum programs under a single entity.
According to the EuroHPC JU, the change broadens the mandate of the Joint Undertaking from supercomputing toward next-generation computing infrastructure, including quantum technologies. Future calls in quantum technologies would be integrated into the EuroHPC JU’s work program.
