On October 4, 2022, the European High Performance Computing Joint Undertaking (EuroHPC JU) announced the selection of six sites across the EU to host and operate the first European quantum computers. The selected hosting entities were IT4Innovations in Czechia, the Leibniz Supercomputing Centre (LRZ) in Germany, the Barcelona Supercomputing Center (BSC-CNS) in Spain, GENCI/CEA in France, CINECA in Italy, and the Poznań Supercomputing and Networking Center (PSNC) in Poland.
According to the EuroHPC JU announcement, the quantum computers would be integrated into existing supercomputers at each site, with a planned total investment of more than €100 million ($98 million). The EuroHPC JU would co-fund up to 50% of the total cost, with the remainder from 17 participating states.
Hosting entities were selected following a call for expression of interest launched in March 2022. The selected proposals ensured diversity in quantum technologies and architectures, giving European users access to multiple quantum platforms. The systems were to be available for research and development to a wide range of European users from science, industry, and the public sector.
