VTT Technical Research Centre of Finland and IQM Quantum Computers announced the completion of a 20-qubit quantum computer on October 10, 2023, marking the second phase of the government-funded quantum computing project. The system was located at VTT’s Micronova facility in Espoo, alongside Finland’s first five-qubit machine, which had been operational since late 2021.

VTT’s President and CEO Antti Vasara said the institution had set goals to build three quantum computers in four years using domestic industry. According to the IQM press release, the Finnish government had announced a total budget of €70 million (~$74 million) to scale up the quantum computer toward 300 qubits. VTT and IQM said they planned to complete the 50-qubit upgrade by the end of 2024.
