VTT Technical Research Centre of Finland and IQM Quantum Computers announced on March 4, 2025, the completion of a 50-qubit superconducting quantum computer, described as the first of its kind developed in Europe. According to VTT, the system was available for research and business use through VTT’s quantum computing service and was housed at the Micronova facility in Espoo.
The 50-qubit machine completed a four-year joint development project that began in November 2020 with €20.7 million (~$22 million) in government funding. Development proceeded through three phases: a five-qubit system in 2021, a 20-qubit system in 2023, and the final 50-qubit target. VTT said the computer was integrated with the Finnish high-performance computing infrastructure, including the LUMI supercomputer operated by CSC-IT Center for Science, enabling hybrid quantum-classical workflows.
