VTT Technical Research Centre of Finland selected Finnish quantum startup IQM Quantum Computers as its innovation partner for the government-funded quantum computer project. IQM was chosen through an international public tender process. The €20.7 million (~$24.6 million) project, financed entirely by the Finnish government, aimed to deliver a five-qubit system within the first year and a 50-qubit device by 2024.
Minister of Economic Affairs Mika Lintilä announced the partnership at a virtual event organized by the Ministry of Economic Affairs and Employment and VTT. According to the ministry’s press release, the computer would be built at the Micronova facility in Espoo, operated jointly by VTT and Aalto University. VTT said it would also pursue parallel work on quantum sensors and quantum-encryption algorithms alongside the computer build.
