The Finnish government granted €20.7 million (~$23.3 million) to VTT Technical Research Centre of Finland for the construction of the country’s first quantum computer. The three-phase project, set to run from 2020 to 2024, targeted a 50-qubit superconducting device, with a five-qubit system planned as the initial milestone within the first year.

According to VTT, the funding was structured to support Finnish and European companies and research institutions while building national competence in quantum hardware, algorithms, and applications. The quantum computer was to be built at the Micronova facility in Espoo, a joint research infrastructure of VTT and Aalto University. Finland’s Minister of Economic Affairs Mika Lintilä said the investment aimed to position Finland as a European leader in quantum technologies, as noted in the VTT press release.
