France, Germany, and the Netherlands co-led a joint statement on post-quantum cryptography transition issued by cybersecurity authorities from 18 European Union member states on November 27, 2024 BSI press release on joint EU PQC statement. The statement, titled “Securing Tomorrow, Today: Transitioning to Post-Quantum Cryptography,” was presented during the European Cyber Security Meeting in Athens.
The document urges public administration, critical infrastructure providers, IT providers, and industry to make the transition to post-quantum cryptography a top priority. It recommends that systems handling sensitive data be protected against “store now, decrypt later” attacks as soon as possible, and no later than the end of 2030.
A Work Stream on post-quantum cryptography, co-chaired by France, Germany, and the Netherlands, was created as part of the NIS Cooperation Group following a recommendation of the European Commission. The work stream aims to prepare a roadmap for the transition to post-quantum cryptography to ensure the quantum resilience of European Union digital infrastructures.
