In June 2023, IBM announced plans to open its first Europe-based quantum data center at its existing facility in Ehningen, Germany, with operations expected to begin in 2024. The data center would house multiple IBM quantum computing systems, each with utility-scale 127-qubit Eagle processors, and serve as IBM Quantum’s European cloud region, with all processing and job data remaining within EU borders, according to Inside Quantum Technology.

The announcement built on IBM’s 2021 deployment of its first Quantum System One in Ehningen for Fraunhofer-Gesellschaft. Over 60 European organizations accessed IBM quantum systems through the IBM Quantum Network, including Bundeswehr University, Deutsche Telekom’s T-Systems, Fraunhofer-Gesellschaft, and CERN. The data center opened in October 2024.
