On January 23, 2025, Infineon Technologies announced it had received the world’s first Common Criteria EAL6 certification for the implementation of a post-quantum cryptography algorithm in a security controller, awarded by the German Federal Office for Information Security (BSI). The ML-KEM algorithm was implemented on Infineon’s TEGRION security controller, a 28nm device based on the company’s Integrity Guard 32 architecture, according to Infineon’s press release.
EAL6 represents a highly advanced level of assurance under the Common Criteria scheme, which is recognized by governments worldwide. The certification covered resistance against both classical attacks such as fault attacks and future quantum computer attacks. Applications for the certified technology include eSIM, 5G SIM, smart cards, personal IDs, payment cards, and eHealth cards.
BSI President Claudia Plattner stated that the availability of quantum-safe IT products in everyday applications represented “a real milestone.” Infineon’s Thomas Rosteck, Division President of Connected Secure Systems, said the company would continue working on “further and more advanced quantum-resistant solutions.”
