On January 6, 2021, Federal Research Minister Anja Karliczek published Germany’s “Roadmap Quantum Computing,” setting out a detailed implementation plan for the €2 billion quantum commitment announced in 2020. The BMBF would contribute €1.1 billion by 2025 for research and development, while the Federal Ministry for Economic Affairs and Energy (BMWi) would provide €878 million for applications development, according to Science|Business.

The German Aerospace Center (DLR) was designated to receive the largest share of the funding, approximately €740 million, to team up with industry in forming consortia for quantum computing development. The roadmap, developed by a 16-member expert council drawn from business and science, set a goal of building a competitive quantum computer with at least 100 individually controllable qubits within five years.

Karliczek stated that the plan would help Germany “become a first league player in this technology” and strengthen technological sovereignty in Europe.
