Ghana hosted the global closing ceremony of the International Year of Quantum Science and Technology (IYQ 2025) in Accra on February 10-11, 2026. According to News Ghana, the two-day event at the Labadi Beach Hotel was organized by UNESCO in collaboration with Ghana’s Ministry of Education and the Ministry of Environment, Science, Technology and Innovation (MESTI). Government officials, UNESCO directors, university professors, and representatives from international scientific associations attended.
Ghana’s Minister of Education, Haruna Iddrisu, called for increased investment in science education, particularly quantum sciences. He noted that about 140 countries have yet to develop national quantum strategies and called for intensified awareness and engagement. Suweibatu Adam, Chief Director of MESTI, stated at the ceremony that Ghana’s engagement in international scientific cooperation included its participation in multilateral initiatives and global knowledge platforms, according to GhanaWeb.
As reported by The Quantum Insider, the ceremony formally launched the Global Quantum Initiative and released UNESCO’s official IYQ 2025 report. Programming included panel discussions on Africa’s quantum future, quantum education, and global collaboration. A welcome dinner was sponsored by the Ghana Minister for Education.
