The Department of Science and Technology (DST), Government of India, launched the Quantum-Enabled Science and Technology (QuEST) program in 2018. The program was India’s first coordinated quantum research initiative, funding 51 projects across national quantum laboratories with a budget of ₹250 crore (approximately USD 35 million).
QuEST covered research themes including photonic quantum computing, ion-trap devices, and superconducting qubits. According to the DST, the program developed infrastructure required to progress quantum technology development and helped the government identify national quantum labs and experts. It also provided a national umbrella for the quantum research ecosystem to work collaboratively.
An earlier phase of the program, announced with ₹80 crore in initial funding, issued requests for proposals in quantum computing. QuEST set the goal of building quantum computers and communications systems within ten years.
