On April 12, 2021, the Atomic Energy Organization of Iran (AEOI) opened the National Center for Quantum Technology. AEOI head Ali Akbar Salehi attended the ceremony and spoke about progress made by Iranian scientists in the field.

Salehi called quantum technology “a very important field” and said Iran was applying quantum research across computing, biology, sensor construction, and simulation. The Tehran Times reported the center’s opening as a step in Iran’s effort to consolidate quantum research activities that had previously been distributed across AEOI-affiliated laboratories, including the Karaj-based entanglement laboratory opened in 2018.
