The IrelandQCI consortium completed its first government use case demonstration, successfully testing quantum-secure communication systems on Dublin City Council’s municipal fiber network. The trial created a highly secure connection between two strategic Dublin City Council locations, according to Trinity College Dublin’s announcement.
During the trial, the consortium tested quantum-based security technology in a real operational environment, showing that it works reliably under everyday conditions. The demonstration was delivered as part of the Smart Docklands programme, a joint initiative between Dublin City Council and the CONNECT Centre. Project partner Asiera (formerly HEAnet) deployed the quantum communication systems.
Professor Dan Kilper, Director of the CONNECT Centre at Trinity, said quantum-secure communications will be critical to protecting public services in the years ahead. Jamie Cudden, Executive Manager at Dublin City Council, said a future-proof communications network is fundamental to delivering secure public services. IrelandQCI is developing quantum key distribution infrastructure along a major backbone network connecting Dublin to Cork via Waterford.
