Minister for Further and Higher Education, Research, Innovation and Science Simon Harris TD launched Quantum 2030, Ireland’s first national strategy for quantum technologies, on November 15, 2023. Published by the Department of Further and Higher Education, Research, Innovation and Science, the strategy sets a vision for Ireland to become an internationally competitive hub in quantum technologies by 2030, according to the government’s press release.

Minister Harris stated that the publication of Quantum 2030 marks the adoption of its vision as a whole-of-government policy goal. Quantum 2030 is structured around four distinct pillars and one cross-cutting pillar: supporting excellent fundamental and applied quantum research; nurturing top science and engineering talent; strengthening national and international collaboration; stimulating innovation, entrepreneurship, and economic competitiveness; and building awareness of quantum technologies and real-world benefits.

According to the strategy document, Ireland has a highly interconnected quantum community with capabilities across the full quantum stack well beyond what its small size would suggest. Many of the world’s largest quantum technology enterprises maintain a presence in Ireland. The strategy aligns with related national policy documents including Impact 2030, Ireland’s Research and Innovation Strategy, and the Harnessing Digital framework.
