Trinity College Dublin (TCD) and Microsoft Ireland announced a collaboration focused on next-generation quantum technologies and workforce development. Microsoft agreed to provide funding to support PhD students working on quantum research at Trinity and to establish a female scholarship program for Trinity’s new MSc in Quantum Science and Technology, which began accepting students in September 2021, according to Trinity’s announcement.
Minister for Further and Higher Education, Research, Innovation and Science Simon Harris TD welcomed the collaboration, stating that quantum computing technology would be instrumental in addressing society’s biggest challenges. He described the female scholarship program as “a most welcome initiative.”
Professor John Goold, who directs the new MSc program, said the collaboration would place research and innovation at the center of teaching, with a unique emphasis on direct industry engagement via internships. The MSc program covers quantum information theory, the physics of quantum hardware, and quantum materials.
