From May 28 to 30, 2024, the newly formed IEC/ISO Joint Technical Committee 3 (JTC 3) on Quantum Technologies held its inaugural plenary meeting at the Plaza Hotel Seoul. The Korean Agency for Technology and Standards (KATS) under the Ministry of Trade, Industry and Energy hosted the three-day event.
Representatives from companies including IBM, Microsoft, LG Electronics, and Huawei attended alongside delegates from research institutes such as the United Kingdom’s National Physical Laboratory and the United States’ National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST). Government authorities from Japan’s Ministry of Economy, Trade, and Industry and China’s Ministry of Industry and Information Technology also participated.
Over the three days, experts discussed standards development in quantum computing, quantum sensing, basic terminology, and quantum technology classification. An international symposium on the second day provided a forum for countries to share standards strategies and their respective quantum technology development progress. Korea, serving as JTC 3 chair since February 2024, organized the meeting.
