In May 2019, ISO/IEC JTC 1 reconstituted Advisory Group 4 (AG 4) to strengthen research on quantum computing applications and market demand. AG 4, which succeeded the earlier Study Group 2, completed a study report for quantum computing during this period.
The report evaluated the landscape of quantum computing standardization activity across ISO, IEC, and external bodies. It examined existing standards projects, identified potential work items, and assessed whether JTC 1 should establish a dedicated working group. AG 4’s findings laid the groundwork for a formal decision at a subsequent JTC 1 plenary on creating a standing entity for quantum computing standardization.
