Italy’s National Cybersecurity Agency (Agenzia per la Cybersicurezza Nazionale, or ACN) published a guidance document titled “Crittografia Post-Quantum e Quantistica: Preparazione alla Minaccia Quantistica” (Post-Quantum and Quantum Cryptography: Preparing for the Quantum Threat) in July 2024. The document was published on the ACN cryptography page as part of the agency’s awareness-raising initiatives on cryptography as a cybersecurity tool.

According to ACN, the publication provides an overview of the current landscape regarding the quantum threat to modern cryptography, including the main post-quantum and quantum alternatives and developments at the international level. The document is intended to inform relevant structures and entities about the need to begin preparing for a transition to quantum-resistant cryptographic methods.

ACN released the guidance consistent with measures outlined in Italy’s National Cybersecurity Strategy 2022-2026 and applicable national and European regulations. The agency later co-signed a joint international statement on PQC transition with 21 other agencies in November 2024.
