A 140-qubit neutral atom quantum computer developed by Pasqal arrived at the DAMA Emilia-Romagna Technopole in Bologna on February 17, 2026, according to an announcement from ICSC. The system is the EuroQCS-Italy quantum computer, procured under a €13 million contract signed by the EuroHPC Joint Undertaking and Pasqal in March 2025.
Hosted and operated by CINECA at its Bologna site, the quantum simulator is integrated into the Leonardo pre-exascale supercomputer, enabling hybrid quantum-classical computing workflows. The system operates in analog mode in its first generation, with a planned 2027 upgrade to introduce hybrid analog/digital capabilities.
EuroQCS-Italy is co-funded equally by the EuroHPC JU and the Italian Ministry of University and Research through ICSC. The system is available to European researchers, industry users, and public sector organizations for applications in quantum many-body physics, optimization, machine learning, quantum chemistry, and materials science simulation.
