Under Italy’s G7 presidency, G7 Industry, Technology, and Digital ministers met in Verona and Trento on March 14-15, 2024, and adopted a joint ministerial declaration that included quantum technologies as a formal agenda item. Minister of Enterprises and Made in Italy Adolfo Urso chaired the first day in Verona, while Undersecretary of State for Technological Innovation Alessio Butti led the Trento sessions.
The ministerial declaration called for sharing policy strategies for private investment and public support directed at AI and quantum technologies as tools to support enterprises. G7 ministers recognized the benefits of sharing information among G7 countries to promote human resource development, technical knowledge exchange, and support for research toward the industrial adoption of quantum technologies.
A subsequent G7 ministerial declaration under Canada’s 2025 presidency explicitly credited “the Italian Presidency’s efforts to bring quantum technologies to the G7 agenda in 2024.” The declaration also addressed the need for secure and resilient digital infrastructure, including post-quantum cryptography considerations within the broader cybersecurity framework.
