Q-Alliance, an initiative to establish a quantum computing hub in Lombardy, Italy, was launched at the ComoLake2025 Digital Innovation Forum on October 20, 2025. The initiative brings together IonQ and D-Wave Quantum as founding members alongside Italian scientific institutions and government stakeholders, according to a press release from IonQ.

Undersecretary of State for Technological Innovation Alessio Butti described Q-Alliance as “not only a technological milestone but also a model of open innovation and cooperation, a symbol of Italian leadership in the European quantum transition.” The hub is located at the National Center “Volta” in Lombardy and is aligned with Italy’s National Strategy for Quantum Technologies.

Q-Alliance is structured as an open platform accessible to researchers, universities, and businesses, with plans for training programs, internships, and scholarships. The coexistence of gate-based and quantum annealing systems from IonQ and D-Wave, respectively, makes the hub technologically agnostic. QuiX Quantum, a photonic quantum computing firm, later signed a memorandum of understanding to join in March 2026.
