In July 2025, the International Telecommunication Union formally launched “Quantum for Good” as a new track at the AI for Good Global Summit in Geneva, held July 8-11. The initiative, developed in collaboration with partners across the UN system and global industry, was dedicated to ensuring quantum technologies deliver inclusive and sustainable real-world impact as part of the International Year of Quantum (IYQ 2025).
According to ITU, the Quantum for Good initiative works to identify and scale quantum use cases for climate action, healthcare, cybersecurity, and digital inclusion; to promote the development of inclusive global standards for responsible quantum innovation; and to strengthen global capacity through education, workforce development, and open access. Sessions at the summit featured speakers from IBM, Algorithmiq, the Open Quantum Institute, and UN agencies.
ITU Deputy Secretary-General Tomas Lamanauskas stated that quantum technologies can help address global problems from connectivity gaps to the climate crisis, while also noting that the potential comes with risks that ITU is working to mitigate. The initiative also supports quantum skills programs through hackathons, workshops, and interactive tools, and aims to close digital and quantum divides by promoting technical standards and leading multilateral dialogues.
