In November 2024, the International Telecommunication Union, the United Nations International Computing Centre (UNICC), and Quantum Delta NL convened a two-day conference in The Hague titled “Quantum for Good: Setting the Stage for the International Year of Quantum.” The event brought together representatives from governments, the private sector, civil society, and academia to discuss quantum technologies’ role in addressing global challenges.
ITU Deputy Secretary-General Tomas Lamanauskas delivered opening remarks emphasizing the importance of quantum technologies for societal benefit. Discussions focused on inclusive policy frameworks, international cooperation, and applications for achieving the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals. Day two featured thematic workshops on cybersecurity, food security, peace and disarmament, trade and development, education, water, energy, and regional priorities for Africa.
The conference followed the UN General Assembly’s June 2024 declaration of 2025 as the International Year of Quantum Science and Technology, co-sponsored by over 70 countries. Participants charted milestones to be achieved by the end of 2025, with outputs to be presented at a follow-up conference. The event also built on a “Quantum for Good: Frontier Technology for the SDGs” side event held during the September 2024 Summit of the Future.
