On July 27, 2023, the National Institute of Advanced Industrial Science and Technology (AIST) established the Global Research and Development Center for Business by Quantum-AI Technology (G-QuAT) with support from the Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry (METI). METI provided ¥32 billion (approximately $226 million) to finance the installation of facilities at AIST’s Tsukuba headquarters.

According to the G-QuAT organization page, the center’s mission is to advance research in quantum technology, create new global markets, and generate economic value through industry collaboration. G-QuAT was designed to serve primarily as an industrial support center, offering companies access to quantum computing platforms and a test bed environment combined with high-performance computing.

Multiple types of quantum computers were subsequently installed at the center, including systems from international vendors. G-QuAT became a key element of Japan’s strategy to integrate quantum and AI technologies for business applications.
