On December 20, 2023, a consortium of Japanese research partners announced the successful development of Japan’s third superconducting quantum computer, installed at Osaka University. Cloud access for researchers in Japan began on December 22, 2023.

According to the Fujitsu announcement, the 64-qubit machine used a chip provided by RIKEN based on the same design as the first domestic quantum computer. The research team sourced additional domestically manufactured components compared to earlier systems and planned to use the computer as a test bed for Japanese-made components.

Partners included the Center for Quantum Information and Quantum Biology at Osaka University, RIKEN, AIST, NICT, Amazon Web Services, Fujitsu, NTT, QuEL, QunaSys, and others. The installation expanded Japan’s distributed quantum computing infrastructure alongside the RIKEN and University of Tokyo systems.
