On October 28, 2025, in the presence of the foreign ministers of Latvia and Denmark, Riga Technical University and the Niels Bohr Institute at the University of Copenhagen signed a Memorandum of Understanding for cooperation in quantum technologies. The signing took place during a state visit by King Frederik X and Queen Mary of Denmark to Latvia.
According to the Latvian Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the memorandum covered quantum technology development for both civilian and military applications and provided for student exchange programs. Foreign Minister Baiba Braže noted that Latvia and Denmark were the only Baltic and Nordic countries (NB8) invited to participate in the development of the EU Quantum Internet Strategy.
Braže stated that Latvia was the first Baltic state to implement a national quantum-secure communication network and that up to 20% of the world’s quantum algorithms were based on work by Latvian professors. She also noted that Latvia would host QIP 2026, the world’s largest annual quantum information processing conference, in Riga in January 2026.
