Three Lithuanian universities completed the country’s first test of quantum communication technology, as announced by Vilnius University on February 26, 2025. Kaunas University of Technology (KTU), Vilnius University (VU), and Vilnius Gediminas Technical University (VILNIUS TECH) carried out the trial in collaboration with the Poznań Supercomputing and Networking Center (PSNC) and business partner Skaidula UAB.
Researchers tested a prototype quantum communication system that transmits encryption keys for secure data channels between Vilnius and Kaunas. The pilot used Clavis XG technology from ID Quantique, provided by PSNC. KTU Rector Eugenijus Valatka called the development of quantum networks “a critical step in Lithuania’s scientific and technological advancement.”
LITNET, the Lithuanian Research and Education Network, served as the infrastructure for the test. Robert Pękal, Director of PSNC, said the trial “marks a new chapter in the long-term partnership between PIONIER (the Polish National Research and Education Network) and LITNET.” The test was carried out in the context of Lithuania’s participation in the European Quantum Communication Infrastructure (EuroQCI) initiative.
