Lithuania’s Minister of the Economy and Innovation, Aušrinė Armonaitė, signed the European Declaration on Quantum Technologies on June 20, 2024. The ministry announced that Lithuania had joined 24 other EU member states that had already endorsed the declaration.
Minister Armonaitė said quantum technologies “have the potential to open up many new opportunities in fields ranging from computing to space exploration” and called the technology area “of strategic importance” for European competitiveness. She called for pooling “the scientific and technological potential of our countries to make Europe a world leader in quantum technologies and innovation.”
Originally launched in December 2023 under the Spanish Presidency of the Council of the EU, the declaration commits signatories to coordinating European, national, and regional research and development programs in quantum technologies. It also calls for accelerating commercialization of research results, supporting quantum startups, and developing workforce skills. The signing took place at a Lithuanian Quantum Ecosystem event organized by Baltic Sandbox Ventures.
