On October 21, 2024, the European High Performance Computing Joint Undertaking (EuroHPC JU) announced the selection of LuxProvide as a new hosting site for a EuroHPC quantum computer. The system, named MeluXina-Q, will be integrated into the existing MeluXina supercomputer in Luxembourg.
According to the EuroHPC JU announcement, MeluXina-Q will initially be equipped with a 10-qubit quantum processing unit based on spin qubits, with upgrades planned to reach 80 physical qubits distributed among multiple QPUs. The quantum computer will be co-funded by the EuroHPC JU, with budget from the Digital Europe Programme, and by contributions from the Luxembourg government, with the EU investing up to €8.5 million (approximately $9.2 million).
Luxembourg Minister of the Economy Lex Delles and Minister for Digitalisation Stephanie Obertin presented the selection at a press conference alongside EuroHPC and European Commission representatives. MeluXina-Q is the seventh quantum computer co-funded by EuroHPC in Europe and will be available to European researchers, industry users, and public sector organizations.
