Malaysia hosted the first ASEAN Quantum Summit from December 10 to 12, 2025, at Universiti Teknologi Malaysia (UTM) in Johor Bahru. The summit was officially endorsed by all ten ASEAN member states. According to ASEAN’s Science and Technology Network (ASTNET), the event gathered senior policymakers, industry leaders, researchers, and subject-matter experts to explore quantum computing, communication, sensing, and metrology.

Organized by UTM, Universiti Putra Malaysia (UPM), Universiti Malaysia Perlis (UniMAP), and universities from the Malaysia Quantum Information Initiative (MyQI), the program drew more than 200 regional delegates and 2,600 students. Sessions included high-level policy dialogues, scientific forums, demonstrations, and exhibitions.

ASEAN Secretary-General Kao Kim Hourn delivered a video message at the summit, noting that global investment in quantum technologies had surpassed USD 40 billion. He encouraged alignment with the ASEAN Plan of Action on Science, Technology and Innovation (APASTI) 2026-2035. CERN’s Open Quantum Institute (OQI) participated, and student teams from an OQI-supported hackathon presented quantum computing projects during the event.
