NATO’s Science for Peace and Security (SPS) Programme disclosed details of two multi-year quantum technology projects launched in 2018 with Malta as a partner country. According to the NATO announcement published on April 16, 2019, both projects address post-quantum cybersecurity challenges through distinct approaches.
The first project, led by researchers at the University of Malta, the Slovak University of Technology, Florida Atlantic University, and King Juan Carlos University of Spain, focused on establishing and implementing post-quantum cryptographic solutions and protocols. The second project aimed to create a quantum key distribution (QKD) link between Italy and Malta using existing submarine optical fiber cables, with portable quantum stations installed at each end.
Professor André Xuereb of the University of Malta, serving as project director, stated that the SPS projects would help Malta prepare for future secure technology. In early April 2019, NATO experts met with Alfred Vella, Rector of the University of Malta, and Christianne Caruana of the Maltese Ministry for Foreign Affairs and Trade Promotion to discuss further avenues for scientific cooperation.
