On May 11, 2023, the University of Malta publicly demonstrated a quantum-encrypted video call as part of the PRISM (Physical Security for Public Infrastructure in Malta) project, Malta’s national initiative under the European Quantum Communication Infrastructure (EuroQCI) framework. According to the University of Malta announcement, Rector Alfred J. Vella used a Malta-designed secure communication system to speak via video call with Simon Montanaro, Chief Technical Officer of Melita Limited.

The video call system was developed by Merqury Cybersecurity Limited, a Maltese startup, and used quantum cryptography to secure the data link between the University of Malta in Msida and the Melita data center in Madliena. PRISM brings together a seven-member consortium led by RSM Malta, including the University of Malta, Merqury Cybersecurity, Melita Limited, UMNAI, the Malta Information Technology Agency (MITA), and the Critical Infrastructure Protection Directorate.

Initial funding for PRISM totaled €11.6 million, of which €5.8 million was committed by the European Commission through the Digital Europe Programme 2021-2027 under grant agreement number 101111875. The project is one of 26 national initiatives across EU member states intended to create a quantum-secured communications network throughout the bloc.
