On January 15, 2025, Parliamentary Secretary for Youth, Research and Innovation Keith Azzopardi Tanti announced a new quantum computing research programme at a press conference with the University of Malta. According to Malta Business Weekly, the programme, titled “Advancing Quantum Computing in Malta: Quantum Algorithms and Machine Learning,” is led by Prof. André Xuereb and Prof. Tony Apollaro of the University of Malta.

The initiative is a collaboration between the Ministry of Education, Sport, Youth, Research and Innovation and the University of Malta. It focuses on connecting quantum computation theory with practical applications in areas such as healthcare, climate science, and artificial intelligence. The programme includes funding for postdoctoral positions, participation in international conferences, and visits from global experts.

Partnerships with IBM, Amazon, and Airbus will provide researchers and students with access to quantum computing hardware. Plans also include establishing a permanent quantum computing exhibit at Esplora, Malta’s national science center, and hosting the Qalypso international summer school. Azzopardi Tanti described the initiative as an investment in knowledge and the country’s future, adding that it positions Malta strategically in global science and technology.
