On June 20, 2024, Malta launched a quantum-secure test network connecting two Malta Information Technology Agency (MITA) government data centers, according to the PRISM project announcement. Held at MITA’s data center in Santa Venera, the event showcased a two-link quantum test network using trusted nodes and demonstrated quantum-secured communications between the two facilities.

The network forms part of the PRISM EuroQCI testbed and represents the first two operational quantum links in what is planned to become a national-scale quantum-secure network. Key delegates from CEN-CENELEC, the European standardization body for quantum technologies, attended the launch while in Malta for the 6th CEN-CENELEC/JTC 22 Plenary Meeting on Quantum Technologies.

PRISM is co-funded by the European Union under the Digital Europe Programme. The consortium includes RSM Malta as coordinator, Merqury Cybersecurity as technical lead, the University of Malta, Melita Limited, UMNAI, MITA, and the Critical Infrastructure Protection Directorate within the Ministry for Home Affairs, Security, and Employment.
