On August 28, 2025, South Korea and New Zealand held the 6th Korea-New Zealand Joint Committee on Science and Technology in Seoul. The two countries agreed to select quantum communication as a joint research focus in advanced technology and to cooperate toward meaningful results in the field.

According to South Korea’s Ministry of Science and ICT, the meeting was led by Hwang Sunghoon, Director-General for International Cooperation at the Korean ministry, and Robin Henderson, General Manager for Economic Development at New Zealand’s Ministry of Business, Innovation and Employment (MBIE). Approximately 20 delegates attended, including representatives from academia, industry, and research institutions from both countries.

Participants reviewed the latest science and technology policies of both countries and discussed outcomes of prior joint research projects and strategies for commercialization. The two countries signed a science and technology cooperation agreement in 1997 and have alternately hosted the joint committee since 2007. Director-General Hwang said the committee would provide new opportunities for both countries to create future growth engines through cooperation in advanced science and technology fields.
