In January 2024, New Zealand’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Trade (MFAT) published a market intelligence report titled “Quantum and Photonic Technologies in the UK,” examining opportunities for New Zealand’s export community in the United Kingdom’s quantum sector.
The report noted that the UK is ranked third behind the United States and China for quantum research output and second after the United States for the number of quantum companies and amount of private investment. Practical applications described in the report include the first commercial deployment of a quantum-secure network in London and a wearable quantum-enabled brain scanner deployed in UK hospitals.
MFAT publishes regular market reports on topics of interest to New Zealand exporters. The quantum-focused report reflects government attention to commercial and collaboration opportunities in a sector where the Dodd-Walls Centre already maintains partnerships with UK institutions through the Quantum Technologies Aotearoa program.
